Is Not Enough Sleep Affecting Your Life?

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), insufficient sleep is prevalent enough today to be considered a public health problem.(1)

Unfortunately, not only is not getting enough sleep in itself not pleasant, people that are not getting enough sleep are  also "more likely to suffer from chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, depression, and obesity, as well as from cancer, increased mortality, and reduced quality of life and productivity."(1)

In other words, good rest is critical for our overall health and well being. Our body needs  times of rest to recover from exertion, stresses and daily living. But just how much is enough?

The National Institutes of Health suggests that school-age children need at least 10 hours of sleep daily, teens need 9-10 hours, and adults need 7-8 hours.(1)

How does your sleep measure up? We don't usually need statistics to tell us how sleep deprived and exhausted we are, we can just check in with how we feel in our bodies and our minds. We can also notice is we're struggling with ailments that are exacerbated by stress and lack of sleep.

Right next to not having enough time on the pillow is whether your quality of sleep is such that your body has time to restore and reset. Gauging this can sometimes be difficult, but ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Do I have difficulty falling asleep?
  2. Do I need sleep aids to fall asleep? If so, how often and under what circumstances?
  3. Do I wake up in the middle of the night?
  4. Am I groggy in the morning or do I feel well rested?
