Why Be Happy? (Except for the obvious reason!)

We've explored how we can influence and grow our own happiness, but what are the effects of happiness? Why is it so important, besides the obvious that it feels so good?
Did you ever think it was selfish to be happy?
Think again!
It turns out that happiness has many benefits not only for our health, but for our relationships, too. Here's just a few of the empirically supported health rewards of living a happier life:

  • Lower rates of cardiovascular disease
  • Better immunity
  • Faster healing after injuries
  • More likely to have a healthier diet
  • Can contribute to longevity
  • Reduced stress
  • Reduced experiences of pain

When it comes to relationships and who we are in the world, happiness has side effects that help others live more happy, too. People who are happier:

  • Are more productive
  • Have deeper relationships with people
  • Help others and volunteer more
  • Are more generous
  • Are more creative problem solvers

This last list is important because it shows how the ripple effect of our happiness extends out to our loved ones,  community and beyond--the world really. We are all connected and taking the time to build our own happiness can affect someone as far away as India. In this inspiring TEDx talk, What Nobody Told You About Happiness, Saisha Srivastava walks us through a heartwarming journey with blind children in Kolkata.

Did you ever think it was selfish to be happy? Think again. Better health, more meaningful relationships, more generosity, more productivity and more creativity are added to the planet when you attend to your own happiness and well being. Think of it--your happiness helps put a positive spin on the planet!
