The plight of the Asian elephant is grim. They are either put to work hauling logs out of the forest or painfully trained to be entertainers for humans. Both situations create much pain and suffering and a life of labor beyond what is humane.
Recent efforts, particularly those by Sanguadean Lek Chailert at the Elephant Nature Park and Elephant Valley Project in Thailand, are bringing this information to the fore, as well as offering models to reduce harm endured by elephants for the sake of human entertainment.
The plight of elephants in India is similar and thanks to the consistent efforts of Sangita Iyer and the Voice For Asian Elephants and her award winning documentary, Gods in Shackles, their circumstances are also on the road to improvement.
I applaud these sorely needed efforts so much so that a portion of proceeds from all my work is donated to helping Asian elephants through the Tambo Elephant Fund. I invite you to join these efforts to protect these majestic beings through donating directly to these organizations yourself through the Abraham Foundation (Choose Elephant Nature Park).
As well you, too, can refuse to support elephant camps and organizations that make their living harming elephants and other beings for the sake of our entertainment. It's a complex situation because so many communities depend upon elephants or their income, but our voices can be heard through our dollar choices. Let's help the families involved make the transition to more humane practices so we can all sleep better at night.
**Please note: Elephants are being released from their mahouts (trainers) in Asia due to the loss of income from tourism because of the Covid-19 situation. They are unable to support them and themselves. Rescue operations are doing the best they can and are in desperate need of financial support to help tend to these gentle giants. Some are sending a little their way from whatever savings they've been incurring during the shelter-in place, whether it is entertainment, fuel or shopping. Anything you can do to help is so gratefully appreciated!

"May any merit from my practice and teachings be dedicated to help end the suffering of elephants
and other beings at the hands of humans for the sake of human entertainment.
May they be free."
